Over a series of weeks and workshops we collaborated with Westbourne Primary School children to explore what their High Street Hero would be. Using modern day examples we asked the children how they would make positive changes in their community if they had any superpower they desired.
We had over 90 brilliant ideas submitted, which were then narrowed down to 12 final superheroes. Using recycled fabrics, a lot of glitter and a little bit of imagination, we helped the children transform their ideas from paper to reality, and helped them create their own superhero outfits!
From Recycle Woman to Bumble Bee and Red Man to Super Stacey, we had a collection of wonderful heroes ready to tackle the community with their positive spirit. We used the children’s outfits as the basis to form three interactive totems which were dotted up and down Oak Lane.
One of the key projects was called High Street Heroes. In collaboration with Westbourne Primary School they ran a series of workshops exploring what it means to represent a hero in the modern context. They explored the range of challenges that the community faces and how young people recognise those unsung heroes so that they ultimately feel empowered to make positive change in their local community.
Over a few weeks, People Make Place worked with students to help them design their very own superhero . The designs were then entered into a competition. Out of the 90 submitted, 12 were chosen to be made into a reality. The 12 winners used recycled fabrics and materials to transform themselves into their very own superhero design!
Once they were complete the students got to strike their best pose in a photoshoot with photographer Ant Robling. These photos were used to create three interactive totems to be displayed at various locations like the one you see here today.
